RE: Rescue - a bit over the top???>

We are volunteers with an all breed rescue-- Schnauzer Love Rescue, Inc.
We require an online application with current or previous vet and personal references. We also do a phone interview to 'wean out' the applicants that are truly interested and not. We then require a home inspection. Once those things are complete and passed, they are ready to adopt. However, we get several applications every day. Our volunteers have families and work full-time jobs. Sometimes the process takes longer than any of us would like but that's the way it goes.
We do require a contract to be signed stating that at any time you (the adopter) is no longer able to keep the dog for ANY reason, it must be returned to the rescue. You have no right to give the dog away or sell it.
We also require adoption fees. And our adoption fees are a little more than what some people want to pay. But in order to run a non-profit rescue organization, this must happen. Due to our funds, we are able to extensive vet care if needed for a particular dog. The first thing that comes to mind is if the dog has juvinile cataracts. If that dog is completely blind and a candidate for surgery, our rescue pays $3000-$6000 for the surgery so that dog can see again.
I adopted my schnauzer, Holly, March 2004. I became a volunteer with the rescue in Feb 2005. I've had my share of foster dogs since then and am now only doing clerical duties.
If any of you are interested,Schnauzer Love Rescue, Inc.
You can read more about our rescue, adoption process, etc.

RE: pigeon forge tn.

We just got back home on the 10th from a week in Pigeon Forge. They take the lights down sometime in February or March. We did the "Trolley Tour of Lights" and they told us but I can't remember. We go every year in December just to see the Christmas lights and shows. We love it up there ANY time of the year. It's just extra special at Christmas time.
Enjoy!

RE: Good Dog Chew Toy

Our girls love the white sterilized bones you can get at a pet store (PetCo, PetSmart, etc.). Every time I'm in one of those stores, I pick up another. They have them hidden throughout the house. They last forever and, if size appropriate, are indestructable.
As far as toys, our Blue Heeler destroys and eats anything plush. We discovered the "Cuz". She LOVES those things! We have two in the camper. She puts them in her bed to sleep at night.
Hope you find something 'good' for a chew toy!

RE: Dry itchy skin?

With being involved with a Schnauzer Rescue organization, we get many dogs in that have skin problems. I change their diet and put them on a high quality grain-free food (e.g. Wellness Core). I also begin giving fish oil gel caps. I use the Nature's Way Fisol brand since they are enteric coated. That causes the fish oil to be absorbed in the small intestines where they get better use of it. I have not been able to find it locally but order it from vitacost.com. I give one gel cap a day. Between our dog and my mom's dogs, we have a total of 5. Everyone of our dogs is on a high quality kibble and given one Fisol a day. It has also been known to decrease the bad cholesterol.
Good luck!

RE: Breeds That Stay With You?

We take our two dogs camping every time we go anywhere. We have a 7 year old Blue Heeler, Buckets, and a (almost) 9 year old mini schnauzer, Holly.
Buckets is definitely a "Daddy's Girl" and will not allow Gary out of her sight. She does not HAVE to be tied while camping but most campgrounds require a dog to be on a 6 foot or shorter leash at all times. She does not bark at noises, people, other dogs, etc. She will also sit or lay at the campsite and watch the squirrels gather acorns within feet from her and never budge or make a sound. She's friendly to everyone and is always ready for a scratch on the back or pat on the head.
Now, on the other hand... Holly. Even though she's a "Mommy's Girl" and must be in my lap or at my side ALL of the time, I do NOT trust her to not run away. She is very obedient and minds well but schnauzers tend to have selective hearing at times. She thinks every one and every thing that comes within 15 feet of her has come to see her and ONLY her! If she is not kept on a leash or inside the camper at all times, if anyone walks by our site, she will run out to greet them no matter how many times or how loud I yell for her.
I have to agree with most others that it isn't about the breed of dog you get. Training will help alot too, but, most of all, I feel it's the personality of the dog.

RE: mini snauzer starving all the time

Does your friend have access to the internet?
Being a schnauzer owner and a volunteer/foster home for schnauzer rescue, I highly recommend her joining a Yahoo Group called "Natural Schnauzers". There are LOTS of informative members there that may can give your friend some guidance.
Here's the link:

RE: What breed of dog is that?

I went to Sonic a few weeks ago and took Holly, my Mini Schnauzer. The car hop brought my food out and said, "Aww, is that a Jack Russell?" I quickly corrected her. Nothing against JRTs (we half-inherited* one when my Granny passed away), but GEEZ!!
*Half-inherited: We had to move in last year with my mother and grandmother when my Granny got sick. When she passed away, we remained in the house with mom.

RE: Pet a Paws

I use a Dremel tool that is made specifically for pets. You can take a look at it HERE.
A lady I know bought it for her dogs and they hated it. It was offered to me for free so I took it. I love it! I don't use the sanding bands; I use the grinding stone which can be purchased at your local home improvement store.
Just a little FYI, Walgreens now sells the PediPaws. I was buying a doggie bed the other day and saw them. PediPaws

Thanks Katz!
But the first place winner honestly deserved it. BUT, we were beat for 2nd place by a big white dog and a Rotweiler for 3rd! UNBELIEVABLE!

RE: Pet Pictures - READ MY STARTING POST B/4 POSTING

Here's a picture of my darling Holly that was taken Saturday (Aug. 27th) at a fundraising event for our local Humane Society. The photographer only charged $5.00 for a 4x6 photo with ALL proceeds going to the Humane Society.
I'm certainly proud of this picture. It was well worth the money spent! AND, she won 4th place in the "Prettiest Dog" contest!

RE: Full Time in Toy Hauler

We have a TH that we will be full-timing (hopefully) starting the first of October 2009. KZ is an EXCELLENT manufacturer and if there is something you would like changed on the inside, they will bend over backwards to please you. We had a few modifications made to our Sportsmen Sportster to suit our wants.
However, if money is not an issue, I would go with the KZ Escalade. They are VERY nice! And, don't make the same mistake we did. Our toyhauler is a 37K. We got the sleeper sofa and quickly found out how uncomforable it was. We now have two La-Z-Boy recliners and pull them out side-ways in the floor (facing the entertainment center) when we get to our destination. However, with the kitchen island in the middle of the floor, we have LIMITED room between the counter and the recliner. We are thinking about "re-doing" the kitchen area to fit our needs better.
Also, the KZ New Vision is really nice. And I like the floorplan of the KZ Inferno.
Good Luck!

RE: carry the dog on the flatbed while towing? VIDEO ADDED

Being owners of a Blue Heeler, this makes me cringe. She will ride around town with Gary in the back of his truck with the tailgate UP but if we are hauling the camper, Buckets and Holly are on the back seat of the truck with harnesses on connected to doggie seatbelts. Before pulling out on the road, we make sure everyone is buckled up. We wear our seat belts to be safe in case of a crash; I want our girls to be safe, too.

RE: Multiple tie-out question

I saw this product a while back and had forgotten about it until I read these posts.
There is a prodcut designed specifically for this problem. I searched the internet and found it located in several different petstores. It's called Flexi Tie Out. It's almost identical to the retractable leashes.

RE: Dry, itchy skin on my lab

Most dogs with these symptoms are having reactions to food. Your lab might be sensitive to grains. The best way to definitely tell is to change her food to grain free--- my preference is Wellness Core. There are other brands out there too but the Wellness Core has an EXCELLENT list of ingredients.
Also, you could try the Fish Oil as others have suggested. I give my dogs a Fish Oil pill everyday. The brand I use is Fisol by Nature's Way. I purchase it from Vitacost. The cost is a little over $16 for 90 pills.
You could also bathe her in Oatmeal Shampoo. The Oatmeal soothes the skin and doesn't dry it out like others.
Good Luck!

RE: Great Smoky Mountains Question

You will have a little trouble in Knoxville, TN with the perpetual road construction, but except for that section downtown, if you aren't doing the speed limit +, get out of the way, you will be run over.
The last time we were through Knoxville was when we went to Pigeon Forge for 4th of July. There is a detour off I-40 (I think it's I-640) just before getting into downtown where all of the road construction is going on. Then, you can pick back up on I-40 and continue on.
Highlander--- please correct me if I am wrong. Plus, that's been a couple of months ago.
Thanks!

RE: Defeated Creek COE campground on Cordell Hull Lake in TN

There is a Walmart Supercenter that just opened this year, replacing the old small one.
They sure got that built in a hurry! We camp with several other people every October and I don't remember seeing the new Wal-Mart being built. Where is is located?
I agree about the lake sites. They are extremely nice but I still think Salt Lick Creek is better.
We'll be at Defeated Creek October 16th thru 20th. I can hardly wait. There's nothing like camping!!

RE: Defeated Creek COE campground on Cordell Hull Lake in TN

It's a great park. Salt Lick Creek is just down the road a bit and it's much better, IMHO. There isn't really anything close by. You have to drive back to Carthage (10 miles approx-- but slow) and then most of the restaurants are fast food. They have a Wal-Mart but not a Supercenter.
Be sure to stock your pantry, fridge and coolers! They are a dry county and you'll have to drive 30 miles or more to get alcoholic beverages.
We camp at Defeated Creek often due to the fact some of our friends camp there too. However, if it were up to us, we would camp at Salt Lick Creek--- MUCH better sites!
I hope this helps. Good Luck!
